Thursday 2nd May 9:30-3pm Ian Murphy workshop
The first part of this project is a full day intensive workshop with the artist Ian Murphy himself.
Ian Murphy is a renowned international Fine Artist inspired by eroded landscapes, both natural and constructed. His work always begins with his sketchbook drawings directly produced on location, seeking out sites world wide which are steeped in antiquity, and bear all the scars of a weathered and intriguing past life. The creative journey continues on his studio where is passion for mixed media and experimental process takes over. He is renowned for the development of powerfully dramatic drawings and oil paintings, exploring the potential for a semiabstract surface texture whilst holding a curious and dramatic sense of light, culminating in atmospheric artworks that captivate your imagination and intrigue.
The day begins with Ian Murphy‘s introduction to his working principles and strategies, particularly focusing on the transitional stages from his sketchbook drawing through to the final product. All participants will have the opportunity to scrutinise his sketchbooks, flicking through numerous pages to see first-hand drawings up close. He believes it is important for students to gain this valuable insight into the initial starting points and then observe the development stages of the creative process when the ideas grow, with the addition of mixed media layers, into the inspirational large-scale drawings and oil paintings.
You will get to produce several pieces during this intensive workshop. These can be completed and refined in subsequent sessions.
Thursday 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th May
These sessions will be to consolidate our learning, refine prior work and/or apply favourite techniques learnt to a new composition of your choice with expert guidance from Ian Murphy’s videos. The workshop led by him at the start of the block will provide a myriad of possible avenues, techniques, media and content for you to explore independently in these untaught sessions. If you need inspiration you will have access to a bank of video resources created by Ian himself, where he demonstrates various technical aspects. These sessions are charged at a lower rate of £10 per session as they are untutored.
All sessions are 10:15-12:45pm (except the first full day workshop) and take place at St Mary’s Handbridge Centre, Chester.
