Introduction to Illustration with Clare Curran
June 6, 2024
By the end of this course you should be able to:
* Sketch out forms and shapes and create effects using fine liner pen.
* Develop observational drawing skills, finding form and measuring.
* Add finer detail, depth and shadow with controlled fine liner marking.
* Skilfully combine all learnings to draw the object of your choice.
Week 1 Into the trees
You will be introduced to fine liners and the different line weights. Examine the elements of trees, emphasising composition and depth by observing the shapes they form.
Week 2 A forest
We’ll create textures and intricate details by examining both the background and foreground. Employ line techniques to define texture, as well as play with light and dark contrasts.
Week 3 Feathered forms
Focusing on our bird of choice we will look at the feathers for that bird and how they are shaped and how lines are formed. Using our tools to build up line patterns.
Week 4 Birds of a feather
We will develop our skills and learn to use fine liner pens to create detailed bird drawings, focusing on capturing the shape of a bird and rendering its feathers.
Week 5 Ode to a house
We’ll explore a renowned house, understanding how to create structure and form. Delving into textures, shadows, and light, we aim to develop our unique styles, incorporating lessons learned from previous sessions.
Week 6 Home sweet home
For our final week, bring a photograph of a structure or building that holds personal significance, symbolising home to you. Through the application of learned techniques, each of us will draw our own unique representation of our special places, allowing for the progression of individual artistic styles.
Week 7 Bringing it all together
This session will be to consolidate our learning, refine prior work and/or apply favourite techniques learnt to a new composition of your choice with advice and guidance on hand.
